With the help of an oddball community of lowlife friends he manages to rebuild his success and achieve a surprising degree of enlightenment. But I can't imagine these movies without it. Stephen Chow films have this weird, dreamy inertia to them that make the movies impossible to look away from because they are adding new and unusual elements second by second. The God of Cookery is funny because it adds high stakes, fun action, and absurd humor to a context that seems opposed to all three.

While it's my least favorite Chow so far, I really loved all the silly humor and the audacious acting. It's very funny, just not all timer for me. Chow embodies an impossible combination of filmmaking genius, a unique and hilarious sense of humor, and onscreen charisma, and this is his wild cartoon love letter to food and implicitly movies. I saw this with a typically bad English subtitle translation and could definitely sense that there was a level of nuance not making the language leap, but Chow's visual sense and gags are the definition of a universal language.
